Creating a Spring Bulb Lasagna Pot
There’s something so hopeful about planting spring bulbs in autumn. While the garden slows down and the mornings become crisp, I’m already dreaming of the first signs of spring colour appearing after winter. At the moment I’m potting up these beautiful spring pots ready for the months ahead, layering bulbs beneath pansies for a display that will flower in waves through spring.
A bulb lasagna pot is one of my favourite ways to create a long-lasting container display. Instead of planting just one type of bulb, you layer different bulbs at different depths — almost like making a lasagna. The result is weeks and weeks of blooms, starting with daffodils, followed by tulips, and then Muscari, all tucked beneath cheerful pansies.
What You’ll Need
A deep pot with drainage holes- Gravel or broken old terracotta pots for drainage
- Good quality potting mix
- Daffodil bulbs
- Tulip bulbs
- Muscari bulbs
- Pansies for the top layer
Start with Drainage
The first step is adding drainage to the bottom of the pot. I like to use a layer of gravel or broken p
ieces of old pots. It’s a simple way to improve drainage and recycle old terracotta at the same time. This helps prevent bulbs from sitting in wet soil over winter.
Layer One — Daffodils
Daffodils go in first because they’re planted the deepest. Add a layer of potting mix over the drainage material, then place the daffodil bulbs evenly around the pot with the pointed ends facing upward.
Cover them with another layer of soil.
Layer Two — Tulips
Next come the tulips. These sit slightly higher than the daffodils. Tulips add beautiful height and elegance to spring pots, and I love mixing soft pastel colours together for a cottage garden feel.
Again, cover with soil before moving onto the next layer.
Layer Three — Muscari
Muscari bulbs are planted closer to the surface because they’re smaller bulbs. These are one of my favourites for filling pots with rich blue colour and delicate fragrance in spring.
Plant them evenly across the pot before adding the final layer of soil.
Finish with Pansies
To finish, plant pansies on top. Not only do they make the pot look beautiful instantly, but they’ll continue flowering through winter while the bulbs quietly grow underneath.
Once spring arrives, the bulbs will begin emerging through the pansies, creating layers of colour and texture.
A Little Bit of Spring to Look Forward too
There’s something special about planting bulbs at this time of year. It feels like an act of hope during the quieter gardening season. Tucking these bulbs into pots now means that after winter, the garden will suddenly burst back to life with daffodils, tulips, and Muscari blooming one after another.
